Hi-
Our townhome has w/w short pile carpet. We have animals (two whippet dogs and a cat). I have placed scatter rugs at high traffic areas like the top and bottom of the stairs to try to avoid soiling and wear and tear on the carpet. However, our dogs (being whippets) frequently travel at high speeds and constantly shift and rumple the rugs. I've tried the rubber matting sold for anchoring rugs on smooth floors, but it doesn't work on carpet. I am using both cotton dhurrie type scatter mats and thicker, stiffer carpet type mats, but none really stay in place. Any suggestions?

I have a couple of problems with putting scatter rugs anywhere near stairways. First of all, if the rug at the top of the stairs is crumpled up by your dogs and you don't see it, you could end up going downstairs on your head instead of your feet.

I've been cleaning carpets professionally for about 15 years and hate to see area rugs over wall to wall carpeting. First of all, it is really hard to find something that will hold the area rugs in place. Secondly, if you are lucky enough to find a product that actually works, the area covered by the area rug won't age the same as the surrounding carpet. You could also end up with a veavily soiled edge around the area rug that is very hard to clean.

Good quality carpeting should last about 10 years before it needs to be replaced. Most people get tired of looking at their carpeting before the 10 years is up.

Your call.

here's an idea:

would it be a crime to put a nail in each corner of the area rug? down into the subfloor, as long as there aren't priceless hardwood floors underneath? it would work, right??? any problems with that, pro's? (other than catching your foot on the now-secured mat & tripping!)

Why not put a nail in each corner? It's called safety. A rug on top of carpet can and will move NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO TO IT. It can and also will pull the nails causing possible injury. Imagine a nail head catching between the toes. The best thing to keep rugs from scooting around is to not place them on carpet.
