Excuse me if this is not the right forum for this question but it was the closest one I could find.

Where do you mount a CO detector? I know a smoke detector is mounted on the ceiling because the smoke will rise but what about CO? Is it heavy, should I mount it low or high? The directions didn’t say.

I know there are CO detectors that just plug into an outlet, that’s low. The ones I bought are battery operated and mount similar to a smoke detector.

Maybe it doesn’t make a difference?

I've heard both ways, but from my understanding, CO is the same weight as air (more or less.) So, the mounting height is not really important.

You wouldn't want to mount the CO detector on a 12 foot ceiling, but if you have 8-10 ft ceilings, it shouldn't matter.

Mounting location (as opposed to height) is more important. You need one in the living (bedroom/hallway) area, and one near the furnace room or basement. The idea is to detect the CO as soon as possible - before it gets to anyone. The CO near the bedrooms is just kind of backup and to make sure everyone can hear it when it goes off.

Good luck!
