We've recently restained a hartco wood parquet floor. we stained and then put on a coat of polyurethane. It looked beautiful. However when people walked on it it left many footprints and scuff marks. How can we avoid that?

Sounds as if the finish was applied too thick. Makes the top skim and the under stay soft.

Hardplate like you did before you applied the first coat of finish and apply 3 thin coats instead of 2 heavy coats. Be sure to hardplate between coats.

what do you mean by hardplate?

Hardplating is done with a floor machine(buffer) and sandpaper. If done right it eliminates the dishing from sanding open grained woods, like Oak, after the final cut with the big machine. Also between stain and finish. Then screening is between actual coats of finish.

Screening is much like hardplating, only using pads and not sandpaper.
