After reading through the threds, I think I have a relay switch problem (Fan does not shut off on indoor unit, outdoor unit is fine and heats/cools o.k.). I'm pretty much a novice when it comes to heat pumps and was wondering if I should take a stab at trying to replace a relay switch or should I call for service. If I can do it myself, any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks.

Most of the fan functions are controled, in most heat pumps, by a circuit board in the indoor unit. Some do have relays. Without specific make/model information, we can't tell you which you have. Just an afterthought, make sure the fan switch on the thermostat is set to the automatic position instead of "on".

The outdoor model is a Trane XL1000. The indoor model, which has the problem with the fan not shutting off, is also a Trane. The label on one of the panes reads:
American Standard Inc.
The Trane Co.
Model # TWV030B140A1
Installed 11/92
With this information, can you tell me where the relay switch is, and if this is something I can take care of myself? Thanks.

Sorry, I can't help you with a choo-choo (Trane). I stay as far away from them as possible. Not being a Trane dealer & the local dealers not being very friendly, I have a tough time getting any tech info & these guys rape me on parts, but that's ok 'cause what goes around comes around.

Hey
With that air handler there is a power duty relay with printed circuit board on it that delays the action in the relay off for 90 sec.
But it is in a small metal box mounted on the inside side panel. Trane doesn't stock that direct replacement, and they do supply a new relay complete with a set of directions. The first one that I replaced only took me 35 min.
But you can replace the old switch with a 90-340 power duty relay that looks a lot like the old relay. But you do need to read the tech sheet to see how to wire it for no delay off.
