If you lay the living room lengthwise how do you join the hallway pieces without creating a straight line causing a weak link? Is the only way to do this is by adding a transition piece. I would like to have it smooth from the livingroom to the hall without the transition piece.

If the installation specs say to put a transition across all doorways, then do it. Failure to do so, will result in a pulled gap eventually.
Glueless laminate is made to be installed in squares, basically. Meaning each area is a separate floating floor from the next room. It is at the doorways, that problems occur.
The old glue together laminates didn't have this problem as much, because the boards were bonded together, not just "clicked"
