I just installed an Ademco 50P at work and want to test its ability to place a call when the alarm is tripped. It seems to be wired properly, when I trip the alarm, it siezes the phone (the handset connected to it drops out) but I am not sure if it is making a call. I can hear the panel click but I have programmed in another phone number in the building and it does not appear to make a call (the other line does not ring). I have programmed it to get an outside line and given it a fake "account number", but I get nothing. Should the other phone even ring at all when the alarm panel actually places a call? If you program in an alarm monitoring companies phone number, does the phone actually ring there or does it just pick up immediately? Is there something I am missing in programming the unit?

When an alarm panel dials out it will ring the phone at the other end... its hitting a receiver that is just like a modem basically. The phones that techs use to listen in have a monitor switch that does not interupt the actual call but lets you listen in. You may even be connected to the side that drops out. Either way if you have a phone number programmed in the panel should ring the phone. It could just be that you need to verify if you have to dial a number to get an outside line or if its not an analog line. A lot of panels have trouble with most phone systems, they like those analog lines.
