I just had new carpet installed in my Living Room, hall and stairway(*Cotage Creem* very light color).

I put a runner on the stairs and would like to possibly put one down the hall. I was also contemplating putting a area rug in front of the two couches.

Is this over kill? LOL,do people even put area rugs over carpet??

Here are some pics so you get an idea of the layout.

Area rugs on top of other carpets, will never stay in place!!

It will always slowly move in the direction of the carpet underneaths, pile direction. I've seen people damage the carpet underneath, trying to keep the area rugs in place!!! :wall:

Vacuume regularly, and take your shoes off.

ditch the runner idea.

Many don't realise this, but the oils from your feet, comming in contact with the face yarns, leave trace amounts of oil in the fibers. These oils, attract dirt and soil.

Vacuum twice a week and once daily in traffic lanes, with a Hot Water Extraction (HWE) once a year.
Make sure the beater bar brush on your vacuum is adjusted right. That doesn't mean set all the way down, taking the twist out of the face yarns, either. Set it so the brushes barely touch the fibers, or you will accelerate matting.

Thanks for the reply guys,

Is there any kind of stuff I should spray on the carpet to help protect the carpet from stains? I remember when I was younger my parents were talking about carpet with scotch guard.

I'm assuming that there is already some level of protection built into the Carpet, Is it right to assume this?? (I believe the brand is "Philadelphia teterboro")

I will take you up on The following advise "Vacuum twice a week and once daily in traffic lanes, with a Hot Water Extraction (HWE) once a year.
Make sure the beater bar brush on your vacuum is adjusted right.'

Adjust your sweeper so oyu can stick your finger between the carpet and the bottom front if the sweeper. I know this sounds stupid but make the adjustment with the sweeper unplugged. Safety first.

Careful with spray on stain treatments... "Scotch-gard"

Too much and you will have a yellow tint to your carpet in the near future.
Thinking "more is better" bites them in the butt!

Good tips guys thanks!

I'm going to have to check to see but I believe my vacuum has a self adjusting "beater bar brush"..

if you are lookoing for a cover to protect new carpet you really should try the self adhesive plastic films. they adhere to the carp[et so nothing gets underneath. we've tried them all and liek the one efrom plasticover the best.

Boy those platic sticky films leave you with a sticky carpet!!! Also the plastic traps moisture like a greenhouse and causes further problems.

Buyer beware!!

That hasn't been our experience so long as you take them up within the prescribed time, bu your mileage may vary...
