There should be an aray of opinions on this. I personally like the metal for strength like when moving furniture in and out, if you bump it it will hold up well and usually at worst will only chunk out a little bit of mud. The metal corners available now are nothing like the old sherman tank steel they used to be made with in plaster applications, but are still "strong enough"
The vinyl is cost effective, very easy to install for professional mudders, and come in a variety of profiles that are being implemented into mid-to higher end homes. Mainly radiused corners instead of the usal 90*. I have'nt seen a corner get blown out as of yet-talking about cracked/broken vinyl-in any of the new construct projects I've been involved with and all the subs going in and out and most of these guys can inflict more damage than typical homies.
Both work and work well, basically boils down to money and profile preference.
