View Full Version : Ceiling Fan Light Wiring ? A Single Wire?

I am trying to diagnose a problem with my wall mounted fan control/light switch (transmitter). In the process of doing so, I unhooked the light kit from the fan apparatus. When reconnecting I can only find ONE bare ended wire in the housing. It is 1/2 black and 1/2 white and reads "for light use". The light kit has one black and one white. I took down 2 wire nuts while disassembling, but one was simply being used to extend the white wire.
Is this wiring scheme familiar to anyone? The 1/2 and 1/2 makes me believe I hook both to there, but this does not make sense in the scope of my electrical knowledge. I need to know how to properly hook up the light kit so I can test my new wall control unit. Thanks

Scott

There are two standard colors for the hot wire to fan lights. Some manufacturers use a blue wire, and others use a black wire with a white stripe. You apparently have the latter. This is a hot wire. Do not connect a neutral to it. The fan light shares the same neutral as the fan motor. It is all white.

So the black wire on the light kit hooks to the black/white (hot), and the neutral gets bundled with the rest of the whites in the wire housing?

Are you talking about the connections at the ceiling, at the top of the downrod? Or are you talking about the connections between the light kit and fan motor body?

The wires which hook the light kit to the fan assembly. Not the canopy overhead.

I'm not sure. But what you said sounds reasonable to me if it looks reasonable to you. I'm a bit unclear as to what "the rest of the whites in the wire housing" looks like.

Maybe this is a better question...
Does the white wire on the light kit (neutral) need to be connected (to anything) when the fan apparatus has only a single wire? I only disconnected the light kit, and I didn't pay attention to the wiring (assuming it would look like the other 3 fans I have put in). Now I have one bare wire from the fan (white/black) and 2 on the light kit. Where does the other wire go? I'm sure I didn't undo the other bunches in the fan. So either the white wire was pulled from the white bunch (doesn't look like it), it was attached to nothing, or it was bundled with the hot (not possible I think)

Thanks by the way for your responses, this is a great website, I will recomend highly!

All circuits need two wires. You can't make a light work by only connecting one wire. And connecting both wires from the light to the same wire clearly won't work either.
