I have a sony stereo system where I play a CD and after about 1 minute it turns off and says that there isn't a CD in it. The display reads 'no disc'. I thought at first that it may be a heat problem so I took the cover off and put a fan so it was blowing air over the CD portion of the stereo but the same thing happened. Is this salvagable? Any ideas how to fix this problem? I read one of the other threads and it said to adjust one of three resistors. Is this the case for any CD system?

"CD Laser lens" cleaner first. Run it through about 3 or 4 times. Dust sometimes gets inside the CD players and the disc may remove it and fix the problem. If you feel comfortable, you could take apart the stereo just far enough to get to the lens and carefully clean it using a Q-tip and isopropal acholol.
If this doesn't work, then I'd consider something more drastic...worst case is you still need a new CD player!
