I'm refinishing my guest bath and in removing the old tiles from around the tub, the green rock board behind has had the paper severely damaged. I was going to apply concrete backerboard using a layer of thinset and screws. Do I have to patch the paper on the old green rock before I add the concrete backerboard? Also, with the green rock in place, can I use 1/4" concrete board over it to reduce the additional width?

Tear out the greenboard install a moisture barrier and install 1/2 inch cement board.

What type of moisture barrier? I read somewhere else to line the studs with #16 roofing paper? Is that adequate? What about a drip pan in the bottom?

Staple up some 8mil plastic and screw the CBUs right to the studs.
