I currently have a 'standard' type of stairway. The steps are enclosed and have carpeting from drywall to drywall on both sides.
I am going to have the step re carpeted and would like to add a skirtboard on both side just to dress it up a bit.
Is the a standard size of the dimensions of the skirtboard? I am guessing that is needs to be 1 x 10 or 1 x 12 material, does this sound correct?

Thanks.
I can't get to the stringer, but, I can get to the ones going into the basement. Is it safe to assume they would use the same?
Is that the hook? If they use a 2 x 10 stringer, then use a 1x10 for the skirtboard?
