Good forum. Thanks to all the pros for raising the bar for all of us. Does anyone know whether recessed ceramic soap dishes are still used and if so what do they do for the integrity of the backerboard? Aesthetically they look really good.

I guess now adays, they are refered to as niches. Just build your own, custom sized and located exactly where you want it too. While they don't affect the integrity of the backer, they affect the integrity of the moisture retarder placed behind the backer and therefore need to be surface water proofed. By the way surface waterproofing is in general a much better practice than just using a moisture retarder (roofing felt or poly) behind the cement backer. Here's a link to a thread I answered previously about niches.
