My son has a 1992 Jeep Cherokee ( Not the Grand). It is a 6 cylinder automatic. Occasionally it would not start from the park position and he would have to move the shifter to nuetral and then it would start. This week end this occured, however it would not start from either the park or nuetral. I had moved the car and it started just fine. A few minutes later I went to move it again and it would do nothing. When you turn the key to on, the dash lights come on but when you trun to start it does nothing. I checked the battery and cables and all are fine. Any ideas?

it sounds like the neutral safety switch is going bad. I'm not sure if its located on top of the steering column or at the transmission but most parts places swhould be able to find out for you.

The wiring connector that attaches to the neutral safety switch likes to loosen up or crack. The switch could aslo be bad, it's on the side of the tranny and looks like this...
