i needed to open up some walls and used double 2x8 on doubled 2x4's to support 58" span....is this suficient support? this is a 2 story home.

Hi polo and welcome to the forums.

Not quite sure what you're doing. Looks like you tried to post pics in the thread, as you may have figured out, it's not allowed here. You post a link to your pics which will have to be loaded onto a hosting site elsewhere on the web. Take a look at the announcement at the top of the Thread list within this forum for further info how how to accomplish this.

Well apparently they have enabled image posting here now, new to me, and yes I do see the photos today. Looks good, I would have suggested using 2"x10" for the header, but since you've got the 2"x8" there, I think you'll be ok to start drywall.

I'm not sure whether 8" headers are up to code, but I just framed a similar size opening in my basement thru a load bearing wall. I have the architects plans for my house (fairly new construction) and the plans specified 2x10" headers for 48-60 inch openings - which is what I went with.

this is an older home and i see that they used 2x8 joists on the subfloor and second floor. i was regretting not going with 2x12 to avoid cutting the cripple studs, maybe that has something to do with it?
