I live in an old house here in ohio. it was build it the early 1900s. I have a fireplace in every room but never used them. Most of them when we got the house where closed off and had tile on them. A few weeks ago we open one. we had to hammer into a 1/2 thick morter mix to look up the shaft!where the Dampers where at! if any! Did they make fireplacer with out them in them?

there is no Dampers of any kind, but there are two bars runing across the top of the inside of it. I looked up into the shaft and it looks clean, but I will have some on look at it! my thing is will it be worth fixing it up to make it work?

It dosent look like it would take much to get it going again! but I want it to be safe to use! the whole fire place is still there but who ever used to own the house must have blocked off the part where the Dampers used to be, to keep the cold air out!!

any info would be great!!

thanks MR MEW Mf.Ohio
