l have a arched section in a wall that my wife wants to put in a recessed light. Without losing the arch, as the only way l can figure is to flatten the top of the arch, which she's against

They make recessed can lights with an trim ring designed for arched ceilings. I've seen them installed in custom homes that we did the drywall on. Can't give you a brand name, but I would look for lighting or electrical supply houses in your area, I'm pretty sure you will be able to find one to fit your needs.
