I am very curious to know what the cost per sf differences are for tile installation. I live in NJ, where homes are very expensive and so is installation of tile. My question for people from around the country is how are the costs of tile installation where you live compared to where I am.

Home depot offers installation (basic ) for just over $11.00 per sf here in my area and a normal 2000 sf house sells for about $300,000.00

You can go to other sites where you can invite local tile installer for bid. I got one referred from my plumber. He gave me good deal and insisted me to come to the house he was working to see his work. However the cost from HD is way way too much for me. Does it include the tiles? You can have good brand laminates installed for less than $11.00 (materials plus labor). Where I live a 2000 sqft house costs $500K.

Sean, I am a tile installer in NJ and I get $5./sq ft as a basic floor rate for labor only. That $11 must include some things other than labor. If not, they are really out of their minds. South Florida is cheap, about $2/ sq ft for labor. As you get closer to big cities around the country the cost of living goes up and so do the rates. If an installer is good and dependable you should expect to pay for that expertise as compared to a handyman.
If I were you I would stay away from the HD installs unless you can get references on the specific crew that will come out to do your job. Some of the installers they bring in are very flighty and there is a high turnover.

When you have Home Depot or Lowes install your flooring, that price you see goes through so many hands, each taking a little piece, when it comes down to the guy actually installing your tile is getting minimum wage, if that to install your tiles. That is a fact.

My starting price for tile is $4 per foot, with a 200 foot minimum. I bid all jobs after looking at the job at hand. It never ends up being $4 per foot because of all the other work involved, most of the time.

I also will do tile work on an hourly basis.

Time is money, and my time is worth $50 per hour to me.
