Picture cuts out - Mitsubishi Projection TV

The picture on my 6 year old Mitsubishi 50" projection TV has begun to cut out. The set turns on with no problems, it has sound and picture then suddenly the screen quickly goes to a red, green and blue curved line then goes black. The sound stays on but no picture. I turn off the set for a couple of moments then turn it back on and the picture usually comes back. This has begun to increase in frequency; last night I turned on the set and almost immediately it went black. Restarted it numerous times before it finally stayed on.

Any ideas? I'm trying to determine what it may be and how much it may cost vs getting a new set.
