this is my first post - but from what I have read - this certainly seems like a kindly message board.

I can paint walls - NO PROBLEM! I can and have worked with glaze on walls - buuuut - I want to paint my bathroom cabinets. The quote that I received today was in excess of $600 - for 5 drawers and 4 doors and frame - NOT a big area. Sooooooooooooo - I am going to appeal for help and assistance to see if this is something that is worth doing myself.

My drawers and doors are MDF that are covered in that heavy duty plastic stuff :wall: (white). The cabinets and drawers are turning all yellow and icky! I am interested in faux painting a bronzy color on bottom with an antique white over. Will rub/distress the edges of the white to reveal the goldy/bronzy color around the edges.

I am pretty artsy - so I am not afraid to tackle this project. I just need proper steps and advise on if this is too tough of a first project or not.

What is necessary to get my paint to adhere to this type of surface? Would the bottom paint - be a reg paint? The top coat - would I mix it with glaze? What type of polyurethene would I seal it with?? :o Am I asking too many questions..............

Sorry if I posted too much at once. If anyone is aware of a site that gives info on what I would like to do ------- PLEASE let me know.

I would scuff sand the whole surface, and wipe clean. Then prime it with an alkyd or oil type primer. When dry, very lightly sand it again, and wipe clean. Now, for what type of paint to use, it all depends on what finish/technique is desired.

Check the link below for different faux ideas/techniques.
Pro Faux (http://www.profaux.com/index.htm)
OR
HGTV Faux (http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/dc_faux_finishing/0,1792,HGTV_3398,00.html)

Hope that helps.

I refinished a bathroom cabinet last summer and found that primer didn't adhere evenly. However, I found some spray-primer at Home Depot which worked perfectly.

If you are anywhere near Roswell, you might want to stop by Paintin' the town Faux. They carry the Aqua line of products, and the base will also act as a primer even on MDF. They are very helpful and can give you all the product knowledge you need. However, their products are not cheap.
