I dropped my portable CD player yesterday. I didn't even drop it that far because the headphone cord acted as a bungee cord but now it won't recognize CDs! When I push play, it says "disc" just like it says when I push play and there isn't a CD in it. That's a problem with the laser right? Please tell me there's a way to fix this without replacing the CD player. It cost like $70!

I think you are SOL. Probably not much more to replace it than to have it fixed. Consider an mp3 player?

take the back case off the player and look at the circuit board inside. there should be some variable resistors (small flat things that can be adjusted with a screw driver) attached. with a fine tip marker leave a mark on each one so you
can put them back in the position they were originally set at. pick one of the resistors to start with and turn it in either direction no more than 1 quarter of a turn. put a cd in and press play. see if it made a difference. if it didnt turn the resistor a quarter turn back the other way past the original setting. if that doesnt work then return the resister back to its original position and start over with the next one. if you find that one makes a difference (gets a cd to play but skips) then you may have to fine tune the resistor while the cd is playing until you are happy with the players porformance. remember not to turn any of the resistors too far (half a turn max, start with a quarter turn) because one of them will be laser voltage and too much power can fry the laser. this is a very hit and miss method of repair but i have fixed many a cd player like this. this almost always fixes the problem provided nothing is physically damaged :)

ok, in case i screw that up, can anyone suggest a reasonably priced mp3 player that would be good to use while i'm working out? is it possible to download songs from my cds into an mp3 player? i don't want to deal with trying to find mp3s online and paying for them and all that crap.
