When my outside unit is running sometimes my furnace blower doesn't come on at all. The copper lines on the side of the furnace become warm to the touch. Is this normal? The house seems to be at temp on the thermostat. This is my first winter with a heat pump.

When the outside unit is on the inside fan has to run. Can be a relay or the blower motor. Turn the fan to fan on see what you get. Also ywith it calling for fan give the fan wheel a push and see if it will start if so iit can be just the capacitor .now look out when you try this.Post back here and some one can help you.

Ed, I'm trying to get the fan not to kick on. This happens every so often. You know how it goes. When you need it not to work it works everytime you look at it. :wall:

ED ;)Well it took it a week to do it again but the fan will not start when I turn it by hand when in the on or auto position. It just take periods when it won't kick on.

Does the outdoor unit shut down if you turn the stat to off?

Both units are working again after 45 minutes of no fan. I turned the stat to off with both units running and the outside unit kicked off and the blower shut down within a minute after.

When you are not getting an indoor blower yet the outdoor section is running turn the stat to off, does it shut down that way.
It's getting to the point where you will need a multi-meter if you have one and know how to use it properly.
You could try this. When the fan is not running and it should be, give the side of the airhandler a good whack or 2 and see if it starts.
What's the make and model # and serial # of the indoor unit?

Its a Janitol, model# A36-15, Serial#9805538439. like I said ,it sometimes may not run every so often. It was a few days since it showed this problem again. As soon as it starts acting up again, I will reply.

Yes the off switch on the stat does shut the outside unit down when the inside blower is not running. And also I already tried the whack it thing.

Id say we are down to "need a meter" here. When the unit calls for heat and the outside turns on and the blower dont. Does the blower have power to it???? are can have a dead spot in the blower motor. Id say check out the motor first if its good are dont get power to it if ok then up to the fan relay.

ED ;)When I tried rolling the motor earlier when the outside unit running and it did not come on, would that have told me I had a dead spot in the motor?

I just talked to a service man on the phone and based on what I told him he felt that my heat pump was just going through a defrost cycle. He said for me to check the outside unit and see if it was just melting ice off of the compressor and lines. He said to check it above 35 and below 35 degrees outside temp. Can this be right or possible?

Anythings possible but I've never seen a heat pump set up that shut down the indoor blower to go into defrost. Usually the 2nd stage heat kicks in during defrost.

When my old furnace started this, it turned out to be a wire in the box inside the furnace where one of the electrical boards was, one of the wires had actually metled in two. Sometimes it made a connection, sometimes it didn't.
Never did figure out why it melted, but it never happened again.

When a H/P goes into defrost it is a AC at that time. So you wont get cold air the blower should turn on and also the heater strips at the same time. the outside fan should not run. check the blower motor and use a meter on the unit
