I currently have a recessed light fixture over my kitchen sink that is a rectangular shape. I would like to replace this fixture with either a better looking recessed light or maybe a pendant light. I haven't been able to find a rectangular recessed light - how would I go about switching it out for a pendant light?

Take out the recessed light - you may have to remove some plaster to do it, but usually you can just cut the hanger bars (you can see them if you remove the reflector) and the fixture will come out. Disconnect the wiring from the recessed light.

Install a proper round electrical box in place of the junction box that was fastened to the recessed fixture. Use a box that is the correct size for the canopy that comes with the fixture you like.

Patch plaster/drywall around new box. Install pendant fixture.

Enjoy!
