I want to put tile in our kitchen that we are remodeling. It has 2 layers of vinyl and 1 layer of rubber tiles over a old oak wood floor. The sub floor is 6 inch tongue and groove. After removing the rubber and vinyl I wanted to use 1/4
backer board over the oak. Look at the pictures and tell me if this would be enough. Thanks

Cement panels are not designed to go over slat flooring. To use the 3 x 5 panels, you need plywood or OSB over the wood. Solid timber like the 6 inch T&G move too much, for rigid cement panels, without the ½" stable sheets of Plywood or OSB.

Schluter: DITRA can be used if the subfloor deflection ratings are high enough, but the deflection ratings would have to be the same for the cement panels, too. www.schluter.com click on products and look at the orange DITRA waffle.

If that is an oak floor over a plank subfloor, then you should remove the oak. To many dimensional lumber layers. If it is the only layer over the joists, then 1/2" ply before the backer or 3/8 ply over the Ditra. Neither can be directly over dimensional lumber.
