I'm new to heat pumps and would greatly appreciate any help. The temp has been dipping in the teens the last 2 nights and I am not sure if my heat pump is working right. When the temp reaches the low 20’s it runs until the heat strips comes on and heats for a while and then nothing but cool air (thermostat on 69). The heat strip light is still on and the house is still getting colder and very cool air from the vents. I adjusted the thermostat down to 63, the unit cut off for a few minutes and it started keeping up at that point. Is this the nature of the beast or do I have a problem? BTW I have a Tempstar unit that is 12 years old and a seer of 9.
Thanks,

In weather too cold for the heat pump to keep up, the heat pump should run constantly and the strips should cycle in and out to maintain a temp. around 2 degrees below the thermostat setting. If the temperature in the house is dropping more than that, there may be something wrong with the heat strips or the thermostat. When you switch to emergency heat, do you get warm air from the registers?
