We bought a few months ago a new entertainment center (oak finish). Moving to a new house now the color of the e c is too light for the woodfloor from the living room. I am wondering if I can make the color a bit darker, can I stain over the present color or I have to sand it first. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Ordinarily, to stain a piece of furniture requires stripping the old finish.

you'll be lucky to get it stained a color that works well with the wood floor anyway, so i'd recommend painting it. it's the focal point of the room anyway, so paint it an accent color - like black or hunter or burgundy or navy or white/cream or whatever color works with your decor. it'll look better sitting on the wood floor if it's a painted color (or even color washed) than stained anyway.
not sure of the proper prep and/or procedure, but if you're interested in going this route, ask in the Painting or Wood Finishing topics & they'll tell you the steps required.
