Would a light designed for use outdoors still use a standard fixture box? The fixture box will be attached to the joists under the soffit.
An outdoor rated fixture box is only needed when the box itself will be exposed to the outdoors, correct?

If it's not exposed to the weather, it does not need to be weatherproof. But only you can judge how likely the weather is to get to it. Wind can make the rain go almost anywhere. I think I'd feel better with a weatherproof box under the eaves.

Thanks for the response John. It seems you have the answers to all my questions!
My next problem is finding an outdoor rated fixture box that will actually fit a fixture. The lights I purchased before, http://www.lowes.com/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=182141-000000234-SL-4180-OB1B, did not fit an outdoor rated box. The light base overhangs the box by about a 1/4 inch. Not good.
Too make a long story short, I would like to use an outdoor rated box, I just can't find one that fits a light!
If you have seen my post in the other section, I may end up replacing the soffits. So I will be able to install a light either through the soffit or attaching it to the joists. We'll see, I just need to get all my info straight.
