Several years ago I created beams from rough cedar. The mistake was staining them a dark color. Is there any way, other than painting, to restore the color back to near the cedar color?

It would almost impossible to restore "Rough Sawn Wood" to it's origional condition without sanding the rough off. Thus the reason why a lot of people just end up painting it.
