fireplace thermostat

I have an existing f/p in the family room. It has an on/off switch on the wall with another switch for the on/off fan. It's a 7 year old Insta Flame. I wanted to replace the on/off switch with a thermostat because it gets so hot in that room that often we have to turn the f/p off.
Is this possible??????..........I was told by someone that it is so I'm just making sure b4 I go out and buy a thermostat.
