I have a old "veryyyy old, 3.5 hp briggs stratton engine"
horizonatal shaft, that i plan to couple to a gen-set.
it hasnt ran in decades..
i spent a few months tearing it down, carb, etc
and cleaning out alot of debris.
it runs ok....
my problem is sometimes...
it does stall, and when it does it snaps the pull cord..
problem with the points? id hate to hafta pull the fly wheel.
(who knows when the last time it was yanked)
any ideas...???
thanks in advance...

Is the engine running without anything attatched to it? Does it have a cast iron or aluminum flywheel? Sounds like either the points need gapping and/or the flywheel is too light (aluminum) to be running without a load, and/or the flywheel key is partially sheared (which you can inspect when you remove the flywheel to gain access to the points).
