I need to stain and finish a cherry fireplace mantle, I've heard that finishing cherry can be difficult, any suggestions on stains or good books on wood finishing?

Cherry is one of the most beautiful of woods, rich, warm color and nice grain. It will get darker with time. One of the nicest ways to finish it is with Watco oil and then either poly, or Brie wax is OK too.

I prefer natural cherry. It will acquire a patina with time due to exposure to light. A natural finish/sealer is all you need.
