[COLOR=Purple]We're looking to move into a loft... 1000 sq. foot rectangle w/brick walls.
It used to be part of a theater and is pretty cool. New bathroom going in, we'll really be able to put stuff where we want.
Anyone else out there in this situation? I would love to hear how to best arrange furniture and any other hints.[COLOR]

There are some good decorating books on how to decorate lofts. You will have one big open space, so everything will be in full view. Thus, everything you own must make a statement. There goes the clutter!
Most loft dwellers tend to throw traditional decorating trends out the window. Mirrors strategically spaced on walls can give the illusion of more light if you are limited on windows. Posters and large prints work well on walls. Black & white photos can be a nice touch. Track lighting is cool and can be adjusted to shine on photos & art. Stainless steel kitchen appliances are sleek. The functional items in the kitchen should make a statement, too. A nice wine rack can be functional and decorative. Lofts tend to require a more contemporary look, thus traditional pieces may look out of place. Glass topped tables & stainless steel will look good. Neutral colors for the couch or a bold leather one. Something different like an old trunk can make for a great coffee table. Or, a large ottoman. A flat screened computer screen is sleek. If you need a TV or DVD then stainless steel will carry on the sleekness. Accessorize with bold color vases or pottery. There are no rules when it comes to decorating a loft. Don't be afraid to experiment. Lofts tend to ask for a contemporary decor with wood, glass, chrome and stainless steel to create a really interesting look. Colors can be cream, tan, taupe, & white. Bold colors in accessories such as pillows, rugs, & art keep your palette from being bland. If contemporary is not your style, then define what is & go for it. There is nothing wrong with a country style loft.
Walk around and determine how you plan to use the space. Divide it into functional areas. These can be separated by the way you arrange your furniture. Area rugs are a good way to define areas. The back of the couch can separate dining area from livingroom area. You might want a sleeper sofa so you can have an overnight guest. A folding screen or two can separate bedroom area. Kitchen island or counter can set off kitchen as a separate area. You will need a couple armoires or wardrobes for hanging clothing. These can make a big decorating statement. Attractive shelving will be needed for books, accessories, linens, etc.
