I have a 1950 house - all plaster - walls and ceilings. The decorative fan pattern on my leaving room ceiling has been gradually flaking off (I don't know if it's stucco or joint compound)...but not everywhere. It has been suggested that the adhesion problem might be due to calcimite.

I really don't want to remove it all and am willing to try and patch and match the flaked off areas. I'd love to hear from someone who REALLY knows what I'm dealing with.

What has to be applied to the calcimite covered plaster ceiling so that my joint compound repairs will adhere? A man I met while strolling the paint aisles of Home Depot once suggested oil-based Kilz?

What is calcimite anyway?????

Thanks!

Hello & welcome to the diy.com forums.

Calcimite, sometimes marketed as "Dutch calcimite," is a whitewash fortified dry milk product and is still widely used as a low-cost wall coating in many developing/third-world countries where canned paints are prohibitively expensive. Never used this stuff or even seen it, but I would think the oil-based kilz or another product made by zinnser called Gardz would be a good choice for a primer over which successful repairs could be made. HTH & good luck.
