This is my first post to this board. My name is John. How are you all?
Ok to the problem: We were just sitting and watching our Sony rear projector KP53S65 (aprox 5-6yrs old) and a small pop followed by a burnt smell. It is plugged into a surge protector. The TV wont do anything but a quiet click and the red light next to the power button flashes steady. I took the back off to have a look. Very dusty in there. I plugged it back in to observe and see if I could see what might have burnt. What I saw was small amount of smoke rising up from a little component on the power supply board. Disc shaped component a bit smaller than a dime connected into the board with the typical two wires. I wanted to post a pic of the exact part that was smoking but cant find the camera right now. I can post a pic later if it would help. My question is, could it be this part alone causing the problem, or is it likely other things have gone bad too? Can this power supply board be repaired or should the entire board be replaced? Whats the average cost either way. Im not a TV repair man but im ok with a soldering iron. Is it foolish for me to attempt getting this small part and trying to put it in myself?
Thanks in advance for any help, John
