I have a toilet in our upstairs bathroom that does not want to flush, you push and hold the buttom and the water swishes out but does not go down. I have pumped it repeatedly with a plunger and sometimes it will clear out but most of the times it won't. What am I doing wrong? What can I do to fix the problem. Please advice. Thanks Terry :(

You may have something hung up in the toilet trap. If there is something wedged in the trap, then paper will wrap around it and cause the drain to work slow. When you plunge, it forces some of the stuff past the clog but doesn't get rid of the clog. You may want to rent a closet auger and run it through the toilet. It is about 3 foot long with a curved end that will go down into the trap and has a crank handle with a heavy duty auger. These will usually clear out most obstructions.
There is also a product called Drain Care that is available at home centers, Walmart and Ace. It is an enzyme cleaner that clings to the clog and eats it. Most drain cleaners go right by the clog. It takes overnight to work and may need more than one application but it does work well. Safe for all sewer and septic systems also.
If all else fails then you will have to remove the toilet and probably snake the drain line. Good luck.

Here is an image of what a closet auger is...................will remove any obstruction you have, they also have a telescoping closet auger that opens up to 6 feet.
