I am replacing an old ceiling light with a light/fan combo with a remote control. I have tried two different switches. The last one tells me I need a separate wire for the fan. The unit instructions provide for only a black and white connected to house black and white.

Am I going back for a third try at a switch?

Definitely need help on this one. Just plain confused.

The 3rd wire is for independent control of the light. For example, if you have 4 wires in the ceiling {1 black,1 red,1 white,1 ground} coming from the switch. The connections would be - all grounds{incl. green} together, all white together, black from the ceiling to the black from the fan,red from the ceiling to the black w/white stripe or sometimes blue{depends upon manufacturer} from the light on the fan.If you dont have the red wire in the ceiling the the only way to control the fan is by the 1 wall switch & the pull chains on the fan.

Please provide the make and model number of the switch(es) you have tried. There are many kinds and they all work just a bit differently and have different capabilities and different applications.

If you only have two wires at the switch, might I recommend the Hunter 27186.

As it turns out:

Because there is a remote control wired into the unit, no switch on the wall is necessary..We wired the the three black wires at the box together, & closed it up. Remote works..Light works..Fan works..Everything works.. :)
