I have a single stage heat pump. My old thermostat conked out on me so I bought a new one. As a matter of fact I ended up buying a second one after that. The problem is that the existing thermostat had the following wires G, R, Y1, W. But no "reversable valve" wire that is required on the thermostats that I bought (either B or O) so the thermostats that I have bought will either result in heat or AC (depending on the brand) whether I put it on "heat" or "cool". Do I need a special kind of thermostat, or maybe I need to add a jumper somewhere? Thank you so much for your help.

What model is the new t-stat?
If your old one just used the 4 wires, could use the regular 4 wire t-stat... Do you know if the t-stat wire from the wall goes down to a control box? Something has to turn the valve in the outdoor unit over one way or another.
Do you have back up heat when it goes into defrost or when it's really cold out?

Are you sure you have a heatpump unit? Does the outdoor section run in the winter when the heat's on ?

I'm not sure what the model was (i took it back), it was a honeywell unit though. Also, I'm not sure if there is a control box (how/where would I look for that?)
There is no backup heat, i'm pretty sure. I live in san diego, CA so it never gets cold enough to freeze or anything like that. Where would I buy a 4 wire t-stat? The t-stat that I removed had G, Y, Y1, W, and R but Y was not hooked up.

Yup, it's a heatpump, the neighbor's runs at night too (i'm in a condo complex).
Odd.... That your heat pump has a 4-wire hook up....
Look for this box near or on your air handler.. I am guessing your air handler is in the attic???
a normal t-stat can be found in home centers like Home Depot.

If I buy a regular (no heat pump) thermostat which has like an Rh and Rc inputs and add a jumper connecting these two together and hook up my R to the jumber, my Y1 to Y, W to W, and G to G, that wouldn't cause any problems would it? I'm not going to blow anything up am I? Do you think that would work if I have an air handler?
