Static problem after installing HD cable box

I had the cable company switch out my cable box recently as required to begin subscribing to their high definition channels. I have no problem with most of the hundred or so (?) channels that I receive but get static most (but not all) of the time when watching either a HD channel or any of the non-HD movie channels (the "basic channels" seem OK). Trying to describe the static: It is not constant background static; rather, it is a short burst of loud static every couple of seconds. Sometimes I can make it go away by switching to another channel, then returning to the channel I was watching. Other times, it does not seem to go away.

I plan to call the cable company to have them check the box but wanted to ask for comments first. Does anyone have any ideas on what my problem might be? I want to be prepared if the cable guy says the problem is in my own equipment and cable company not responsible!

Could be a bad connection (unlikely)
Could be a bad cable (possible)
Could be a bad box (possilbe)
Could be just bad channels (unlikely)

I would say call the cable company and make sure they bring a new box with them to at least give it a try.
