View Full Version : Just what constitutes "outside" for venting?

Hello All:

Newbie to the forum, glad to be here.

I want to relocate my undercabinet GE microwave to a location in the kitchen that is on an exterior wall. My gas cooktop will be placed underneath the microwave, which will serve as the range hood. On the other side of the wall is a patio of sorts, formed by the 'L' intersection of two exterior walls, with the other two sides open. There is a roof overhang for this patio. The patio looks like it is in a "notch" of the corner of the house.

I have the ideal opportunity to directly vent the microwave through the wall, which will place the vent about 78" above the deck on the patio. My question is: does going into this patio area still constitute going to the "outside?"

Thanks for any assistance.

dendavis, Welcome to the DIY Forums.
I had almost the same set-up on a mobile home. Outside is outside. The only thing I will tell you about using it above the range is that when the range is in use, you will have to have the fan on the microwave on or it will cause problems. The heat needs to be removed from the microwave. I had no problem doing that and you shouldn't either. Good luck.

Thanks. With no apparent "no-no's," I can proceed. We have used the microwave over the stove for years in the current location, and we are very observant of the heat release need; the current location is vented thru the interior wall and out the roof top, we simply are remodeling and find the new location for the stove more convenient. Do appreciate the response.
