We purchased a 10 x 12 area rug to lay over the hardwood in our living room.

The rug is 100% wool and "hand tufted" what ever that means.

The rug is a week old and seems to shed constantly and needs constant vacuuming.

Is this normal or poor quality? How long should we expect it to shed for?

We have a baby who is just starting to crawl and I'm worried about he ingesting the wool fibers.

This needs to be addressed by the person you purchase the wool rug from.

Wool being a natural fiber, will shed to some extent. Part of wools characteristics is a fuzzy look to the surface. That is normal. If you are physically removing face yarn, you have a concern.

I'm not sure what you mean exactly by "face yarn," but the fibers almost look like we have a short hair pet. Laying on the rug with an article of clothing with static electricity, like a fleece sweatshirt, and you look like laid in a dog's bed.

The first week or so the fibers were balling up and almost looked like dust bunnies. Now they're not visible, but do stick to clothing.

I guess I'll give it some time and worse case is I return it to the furniture store we purchased it at. They have a great return policy.
