I would like to paint new heat registers and the trims (baffles) of ceiling cans. I know that the light fixtures will get very hot. Is there a special paint that I need to do this and are there any special instructions that I need?

Make sure that everything is thoroughally cleaned of all dirt, oils, etc. Then hit it with some fine sand paper to roughen up the surface & allow for a better bond. If there's any raw metal it should be primed with a primer made for metal. I'd recommend using either an acryllic or oil base paint instead of latex, as they are more resistant to heat than latex. That's my .02¢, hope it helps.

Definitely scuff it good, and prime with an oil/alkyd. Adhesion is the key to a successful paint job here.
