Hey all. I have a 27" Samsung, 3 years old, and when I turned it on this morning the picture had been compressed all the way into one very thin line running across the middle of the screen. Does this mean the picture tube is toast? Am I reduced to shelling out for a new tv, or can this be fixed? Thanks in advance :)

You have lost vertical deflection which has nothing to do with the picture tube. You probably need to replace the vertical IC and/or one of its components but first check the solder joints at the IC. It may just need resoldering.
