Is there a good heat resistant paint for painting a plaster wall behind an old cast iron radiator that can get very hot? My husband is removing the badly chipping paint down to what looks like the second layer of plaster. That layer appears to be very sound and smooth. He's going to put a layer of spackle over it. The radiator is huge and can't be moved. Does anyone know a good heat resistant paint that won't start to peel for a long time? Thank you. Dale

Clean all the dirt, cobwebs, etc off the radiator, make sure that it's thoroughally cleaned of all dirt, oils, etc. Then hit it with some fine sand paper to roughen up the surface & allow for a better bond. If there's any raw metal it should be primed with a primer made for metal. I'd recommend using either an acryllic or oil base paint instead of latex. That my .02¢, hope it helps. ;)

Oops. Communication problem. I was asking about painting the WALL behind the radiator that gets very hot. We've painted quite a few radiators in this old house -- ones that had been painted in the past and were dirty and peeling. But his particular radiator has never been painted and we want to keep it that way. But it's huge and gets very hot. Consequently the plaster wall behind it, I guess, dried out from the heat and cracked really bad and is coming off in chunks about 1/16" to 1/8" thick. My husband said it's the whole last layer of plaster someone put on years ago. He wants get those loose chunks off, put on a coat of spackle to smooth it out and then paint it. What I wanted to know is if there is a latex WALL paint that is heat resistant so the radiator won't eventually ruin the new paint on the wall behind it.

Sorry, there are many heat-resistant paints out there, but most are an oil, in a spray can, or powder coating. Never seen any that are latex, the resins just don't hold up to extreme temperatures.
