I have a 1928 bungalow with two brick chimneys (each has 2 independant fireplaces on either side with thier own flues) that have been lopped off below the roof line. I have been told by some that I should completely remove the old chimneys and start over, and by others that I can go ahead and rebuild the top of the chimneys and freshen up the joints between bricks in the fireplaces.

I don't know who to believe. I don't see any cracks in the exterior or interior parts of the chimney that are visible.

What should I look for to help me make up my mind? What questions should I ask the guy who says that he can re-build the top and restore the bottom of one of the chimneys for $700?

Thank you for your help.

meppes, Welcome to the DIT Forums.
For anyone who is going to be working on something that could be a danger to you or the house, ask WHY. Make them tell you the reasoning for their decision. Get references and proof of insurance. Ask questions until you are satisfied with all the answers. Get more estimates if possible. Good luck.

I would involve either an engineer or chimney sweep in evaluation of a chimney. These are the only two professions possessing the needed knowledge.
