View Full Version : termite damage: old or new?
After removing a rotted wooden frame of a basement window, I found evidence of termite damage on an attached beam. The damaged beam is honeycombed, but there is no moisture present - nor do I see insects (live or dead), wings or mud paths and the pores are not packed with dirt/fecal matter. Before I chisel out the rotted wood and build a new frame, how can I be sure that the infestation is ancient history and not a current event? Are there other signs I should look for?
Thanks for all advice!

I am NOT a termite guy. But, my experience has been that if the mud tunnels have been knocked down, and they do not re-appear within a month, then you do not have an active termite problem.
That's good to hear. I've lived here 13 years and there have never been any mud paths around this (or any other) window - either inside or out. I checked my 12-year old home inspection report and it did note termite damage on a different basement window and nearby beam. The remedy was to rebuild that frame and attach a board to the beam. But there's no mention of active termites, nor any suggestion to treat for live termites. So I think I'll proceed as planned and will keep a close eye when spring arrives. Thanks.

To protect the investment in your home, a termite inspection is recommended. Maintaining a contract with an exterminator for annual inspection & any required treatment will help assure that your home is protected.
