I want to reduce the noise heard from my ceiling-mount bathroom exhaust fan by placing it farther away in the attic. The fan is your basic squirrel-cage in a rectangular box that exhausts through 4" fitting on the side. I see no limitations in fabricating a solution, and it looks like I can do this without adding many extra bends in getting the ductowork to the roof.

Given that this would be non-standard method of installation and that I would have to fabricate something to get this to work, would there be any safety/code problems to consider?

Right now, I can only guess if this type of installation would be of any benefit. The rating on the fan is 3.5 sones... Would about 5' of flexible round duct between the fan and the opening in the ceiling be enough to get the noise down?

It would be interesting to hear if anyone's tried this before. Thanks.

I've never seen this done, and I also don't think it would work well by doing it this way..

Go get your self a new Boran.. Newer fans runs really quiet. www.broan.com

Look at the Broan Ultra Silent fan. Our store has them hooked up, and you can turn them on to see how quiet it is.

Why not if you want to do all that work. lot of kitchen vent fans we put in are that way. With the fan at are near the roof. But dont forget you do want a fliper there on the pipe in the ceiling of the bath and also where the fan vents out of the roof.
