I have a 4 year old 27" Toshiba and the sound quality has been getting progressively worse for the past few months. Deeper voices, especailly those with resonance, sound like they are talking from inside a garbage can. I've tried to adjust the bass, treble and surround sound (on and off) to no avail.

Any suggestions? I've swapped out a different TV (it's on cable through a VCR) and the otherr TV sounds fine.

thanks.....

You may have a torn speaker cone.

Thanks for the reply. Is somehting like this worth having repaired (I don't have the competence or time to do it myself)?

I doubt it's a torn speaker cone. More likely an MPX ic is going bad. Certain models have been known for it.

The TV is fed via cable. In resetting the sound, I noticed that I have the issue with both the TV being set to stereo and mono but NOT with the "SAP" setting (I don't know what SAP is). When it's on SAP, the sound does not come from the channel that it's on but from the BBC (although the video signal remains the same).

If your tv has audio outputs you could run the sound from it to a receiver and a set of speakers.
