I am trying to replace an old bathtub/shower faucet set. Do I have to replace the brass fixture in the wall that comes with the new set? Do I have to tear out the tile or go into the wall behind it? Not quite sure what to do? What tools do I need? I won't to do this myself. Trying to save money. Can I go somewhere online to get some illustrations on doing this?

thank you!

If there the same brand then replacing the valve in wall will not be needed, if there totally different brands, then you will have to open wall to make this happen.

Exactly what brand and model is installed now, and what brand and model are you wanting to put in?

First, if it is a different brand....end of story. Open the wall.

The one situation I am familiar with where you can easily "upgrade" and older unit: Older Price Pfister 2 or 3 handle tub/shower units can be upgraded to the newer ceramic disc stems and the available trims are many. Keep in mind that you must remove the existing seats and leave them out.

I don't want to hijack a thread, but I'm having a very similar problem. My faucet in one of my tubs has the knob for turning on the shower broken off. On the same tub, the handle broke for turning on the water as well. I want to replace them, but the wall behind the tub is in my office (not a closet). Could I fix this by buying another Moen set of fixtures and not going through the wall?
