View Full Version : I fixed a leak...
But I don't know how I did it. I noticed water dripping from a drain pipe in my basement. I traced it back to a toilet in the master bath on the second floor.
I proceeded a process of elimination to fix it. Not the supply, changed the wax ring twice. Notice that water was overrunning the flush valve continually. Fixed that problem and the leak apparently stopped. How would that of allowed water to get to the outside of the drain pipe and follow the pipe down two stories and not leave a water mark on anything but the basement floor?

Interesting question. The only thing I can come up with is that the constant flow of water (since the weather is cold) caused condensation to form on the pipe and it ran down to the basement. Glad you got it fixed though.
I wish it was just condensation. As far as drips go, this was a pretty significant amount of water. I will be soon putting up sheet rock in my basement and I would hate for this drip to appear again without knowing exactly what caused it. All I know is the tank would fill to point that it would overflow into the flush valve and somehow water would find its way outside the drain pipe and follow it to the basement. How can water be such a valuable asset but also be such a damaging manace? uhgggg!

Do you have an attic? If so, I would go up there and look at the main drainline which is what your toilet hooks up to. There may be a roof leak around the pipe where it exits the attic and goes through the roof. This could just be a coincidence that happened while you had the toilet problem. I agree in your reasoning about finding it before you do any drywall work.
My answer about condensation was due to cold water and a warm pipe. If the outside temp was warm, every time you use a fixture the line pulls air into it to allow drainage. Then you add cold water continually and the chance of condensation is there. Keep us posted if you find the source or have any other questions.
