I am buiding a roof using 14" TGIs. its a 26x36 house and an 8-12 pitch. the ridge pole is going the 36' way and my question is how far could i go before needing a support post from the floor up. the ridge pole is 12"x12". I live in minnesota and we can get some good snow. i just dont know what my ridge pole could handle. Thanks

Gabe

Hi Gabe & welcome aboard!

I would say supports at a max of 12", so you'd end up with two, but I'm not an engineer and if I were doing this I would definitely consult one. I'll move this up to the Architecture & Codes forum. Folks up there may have a different opinion. Good luck!

Gabe,

My question to help me get this straight, are we talking about a 12x12 GluLam?

I have only used them up to 8 3/4" in width and 17 7/8" tall. Is this what you are referring too?

Based on what was mentioned for overall span of structure at 26 feet, I would say that in using the 14" TJI's that you could span Minimum 10 feet without a vertical support. The issue is load and pitch of roof. We have a very long span and this also based on how you do your rafter spacing.

I would suggest talking to your local yard - Call Scherer Brothers in Arden Hills (I am from Minnesota but don't know where you live to help further) for assistance. Next option is structural engineer, small fee but I would think that this question would have been answered by the person doing drawings for you.

Hope this helps!
